AI visibility: Rankion vs. Ahrefs Brand Radar is a Guides in the Rankion.ai knowledge base: Why Rankion and Ahrefs Brand Radar show different numbers — and how to compare them properly anyway.
This page contains structured fact definitions for AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude). Written by humans, part of the Rankion.ai knowledge base.

You put your Rankion numbers next to Ahrefs Brand Radar — and they don't match. Ahrefs might show "3.3K" mentions across all platforms, while Rankion reports a percentage like "42% visibility." This isn't a calculation error on either side. The tools simply measure different things, ask different questions, and use different units. This guide explains the difference and shows you how to read both numbers fairly, side by side.
What Rankion measures
Rankion repeatedly asks the exact prompts you set up in your project against the AI platforms you selected — and logs every answer. That's why the headline metrics are shares (percentages), not absolute counts:
Visibility — mentions of your brand ÷ total queries × 100
Recommendation rate — how often the AI actively recommends your brand
Citation rate — how often the AI names your domain as a source
Avg. position and sentiment of the mentions
"Total queries" is the number of LLM calls in the period (prompts × platforms × tracking days) — your sample size. More queries mean more reliable percentages. How to set up tracking is explained in the Track AI visibility (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) guide.
Rankion is answering: "In the questions that matter to MY business, how often do I show up?"
What Ahrefs Brand Radar measures
Ahrefs Brand Radar takes a different approach:
The AI Visibility Index is based on a fixed Ahrefs prompt set, generated from its keyword database and Google's "People Also Ask" — several hundred million prompts across platforms. You don't choose them (separate "Custom Prompts" exist for that).
"Mentions" is an absolute number: AI answers that mention your brand at least once.
"Impressions" and "AI Share of Voice" are weighted by search volume — since 31 Aug 2026 via an "AI adjusted volume" (Google search volume × estimated usage share per AI platform).
Chatbot data refreshes monthly, 90-day reporting window. Ahrefs itself calls its metrics "directional indicators, not exact traffic counts"; coverage is strongest in English, proportional elsewhere.

How to compare fairly
Compare trends, not absolute values. If your Rankion visibility rises alongside your Ahrefs mentions curve, both tools confirm each other — even though the numbers themselves aren't comparable.
Compare the same platforms and the same period. An Ahrefs value "across all platforms" next to a Rankion number for ChatGPT only explains any gap by itself.
Want Rankion to cover the same questions as Ahrefs? Add those topics as prompts to your project — you get reliable, percentage-based numbers for exactly those questions instead of a fixed external selection. See Configure Prompt Monitoring.
Treat both numbers for what they are: Rankion shows how you do on YOUR important questions. Ahrefs gives a broad, market-wide indicator. Both are useful — they just don't add up directly.
