If your website uses Matomo instead of Google Analytics, rankion.ai can read the numbers from your own Matomo instance: visits, conversions, revenue and visitors from AI search. You then see them in the Performance tab of your project.

This is about your instance. It is not the Matomo that rankion.ai uses on its own public pages; the FAQ covers that one.

Only owners and administrators of your team can set up the connection. rankion.ai reads aggregated reports only, never single visitors, and changes nothing in Matomo.

Before you start

Your instance has to meet three conditions:

Requirement Why
Reachable over https (port 443) This way your token travels encrypted. rankion.ai does not accept http addresses or other ports, for security reasons
Reachable over IPv4 An IPv6-only instance cannot be entered at the moment
Matomo 5.5.0 or newer for AI visitors Older versions do not know the channel. Everything else works there too, and the channel records from the update onwards

Step 1: Create a read-only user

Create a separate user in Matomo instead of using your main account. A token inherits the rights of the account it comes from.

  1. In Matomo, open Administration → System → Users and create a new user.
  2. Give the user the View permission for the website in question. rankion.ai needs nothing more.

Step 2: Create a token

  1. Log in as that user and open Administration → Personal → Security.
  2. Under Auth tokens, choose Create new token and enter a purpose such as "rankion".
  3. Tick Only allow secure requests if your version offers it. The token is then valid for POST requests only, which is how rankion.ai asks.
  4. Copy the token right away. Matomo shows it only once.

Step 3: Enter it in rankion.ai

  1. Open the Matomo page (/integrations/matomo).
  2. Enter the address of your instance, for example https://analytics.example.com, and the token.
  3. Click Verbindung prüfen (check connection). rankion.ai queries your instance right away and saves only if it answers.
  4. The token is stored encrypted and never shown again. If you change the address later, you have to enter it again, and the sites and numbers of the old instance are deleted.
  1. Under Sites, choose the backfill period (30, 90, 180 or 365 days).
  2. Choose the project next to your website and click Link.
  3. The backfill runs in the background. You can leave the page; while it is open you see the progress.

After that, rankion.ai pulls the last three days again every night.

What you see in the Performance tab

  • Visits, conversions and revenue for the chosen period and as a trend.
  • Visitors from AI search: the total, the share of all visits and the split per assistant.
  • Matomo does not separate AI visits into paid and organic, so the three tiles from the Google Analytics view are missing.
  • If Google Analytics is linked to a project as well, the page shows Google Analytics and only mentions Matomo. The two are not added up, because the same visit would count twice.

If something does not work

Message What to do
https addresses only Start the address with https://. If your instance has no certificate yet, set one up first, for example free of charge with Let's Encrypt
Standard port 443 only Remove the port from the address. The instance has to be reachable over https on port 443
The name cannot be resolved The address is wrong, or the instance is reachable over IPv6 only
Matomo refused access Check the token and whether the user may read the website
This token may not read any site Give the user the View permission in Matomo and reload the sites
